Friday’s national forecast

An unstable front moves into the west of New Zealand today, especially affecting the west of the North Island bringing heavy showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Eastern regions of both islands get off light although a few showers may pass through later in the day.

Northland
Periods of cloud and the odd shower, showers becoming heavy in the afternoon with brisk northwesterlies tending gusty WSW. Showers ease from evening.

Auckland

Periods of cloud and the odd shower, showers becoming heavy in the
afternoon with thunderstorms as brisk northwesterlies tend gusty WSW. Showers
ease later in the evening.

Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells and increasing cloud with northwesterly winds, showers develop
in the afternoon possibly heavy and thundery for a time then clearing later in
the evening as west to southwest winds freshen.
High: 16

Waikato & Central North Island

Cloudy areas, rain develops in the afternoon with heavy falls possible
(risk of thunderstorms about the Waikato) then easing in the evening to showers
as winds tend more westerly. Showers clear at night.

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and some increasing high cloud, breezy northwesterlies. In the
evening a few spells of rain pass through.
Highs: 17-18

Taranaki

Cloudy periods with increasing northwesterlies. Showers, becoming heavy PM
with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. Showers ease then clear in the
evening as southwesterlies freshen.

Western North Island

Morning sunny spells, some rain moves in late afternoon then eases midnight
with northwesterly winds changing southwest.
Highs: 14-15

Wellington

Sunny spells with breezy northwesterlies, cloud increases from midday then
showers move in mid afternoon. Winds change southerly later in the evening with
showers easing.
High: 13-14

Nelson

Sunny areas and some increasing cloud, westerly winds. The odd shower
develops in the afternoon then clears later in the evening as southwesterlies
freshen.

Marlborough

Sunny with some high cloud increasing from midday, light northwesterlies. A
few spits of evening rain possible, winds change southwest later in the
evening.
High: 15

Canterbury

Sunny with some high cloud gradually increasing, light winds. In the
evening winds change southwest bringing a few showers which clear
overnight.
High: 13-14

West Coast

Cloudy with northerlies, the odd shower. Rain moves in during the afternoon
as southwesterlies freshen, rain eases back to showers by evening.
High: 12

Coastal Otago

Sunny with light winds, some high cloud develops from midday. An evening
southwest change brings a period of showers then clearing.
High: 11

Central Otago

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud with northerly winds. Rain develops
early afternoon then clearing mid afternoon as winds change westerly.
Highs: 9-10

Southland

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud with northerly winds. Rain develops
around midday then eases to showers by mid afternoon as winds change
westerly.
