Any chance of rain today?

Filed in:

It's amazing how quickly the weather can change - and within just a few weeks frequently asked to WeatherWatch.co.nz have gone from "When is it going to stop raining?!" to "Any chance of rain today?".

We've taken a look the latest data and this is what we've come up with for today.

ThunderstormsHigh chance of rain:
We think no where in New Zealand has a high chance of rain today.

Moderate chance of rain:
We think those who live west of the Central Plateau mountains - but not south of them and not west of the Whanganui river - have a moderate chance of some afternoon cloud build ups producing some heavy, but isolated, showers today.  Most exposed would be Raetahi, Raurimu and National Park.  No significant main centres.

Low chance of rain:
This covers a much broader area.  Northland, Auckland, Waikato, South Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula.  All of these regions have a low chance of rain (ie, less than 10%).  The risk of rain comes from afternoon cloud build ups, mainly near the ranges, producing some isolated downpours in the late afternoon or early evening.  There's also a low chance of a shower either morning or late night in Southland.

We had some very light rain here in Kaukapakapa for about 15 minutes but now the sun is breaking through with blue skies :(
Hoping for more rain!!

Whangarei Weather

Hi WW, Well the forecast for today was early cloud disappearing and becoming sunny, something went wrong as we have grey miserable cloud at the moment with drizzle patches. Maybe the sun will appear later but my outdoor plans have been reassigned until it improves.
Talk about anti-cyclonic gloom, it has certainly made me feel gloomy but thinking on the positive all will come right soon.

Only 18 so far with no seeming desire to increase. I do wish the drizzle could turn to a bit of good rain as that would be great with the grass already turning brown.

I enjoy your site and the many interesting articles you provide. Today's video was a good one but I pity the poor car owners.

Drizzle

We are getting drizzle here at the moment and for about the last hour. We are at Matakana/ Omaha area.

Any Chance of rain before easter?

There has been some terrible talk going around that we are going to have a worse drought in Northland than we did last year! Already many families are buying in water. The cracks that formed in the ground during the last drought did not close fully over winter and now they are growing again. Can you see any rain on the horizon?

Hi Jason - our feeling is

Hi Jason - our feeling is that December will remain very dry but we're still hopeful of more tropical development north and north west of NZ in the coming month.  Fingers definitely crossed - it's not a good sign at all to be this dry so early, however the one positive we can cling to is that often La Nina increases the number of rain bearing lows north of the country.

Cheers
