300mm predicted for Gisborne/HB ranges

Filed in:

MetService is warning up to 300mm of rain could fall across the Gisborne and Hawkes Bay ranges in the 48 hours from noon Monday with WeatherWatch.co.nz saying it's possible a further 100mm may fall on Thursday, bringing the total closer to 400mm overall.

The figures are very high for a region that isn't well equipped for deluges.  Many farms still show the scars from cyclone Bola in the 1980s.

The low responsible for the rain is this morning drifting eastwards, very slowly, north of New Zealand.

Rain warnings are in force for Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay while wind warnings are now in force, with gusts up to 120km/h between Taupo and Taihape.
