From wild fires to wild wind & rain

Heavy rain that began pounding California on Tuesday threatened to unleash dangerous floods and mudslides, especially in areas ravaged by wildfires.

Residents of La Canada Flintridge, California, fill sandbags to prepare heavy rains in the fire-affected area.

Forecasters described it as the first major storm of the season.


Major storm about to impact California

"This is just the beginning" says Weather.com. The rain and heavy wind that is slamming northern California this morning is just the beginning of a 2 to almost 3-day event that will not only impact California but eventually the interior West too.

A soaking rain is saturating northern and central California and there will be no let up for several hours. Rain totals will really begin to add up and present various problems for the region; some directly, some indirectly.  Mudslides will be a major concern along the west coast.

How much longer will the space station fly?

It's the most complex construction project in history.

NASA's funding of the international space station is scheduled to end in 2016.

Flying 400 kms overhead, the international space station can be seen with the naked eye, orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes, usually carrying a crew of six. Now, before construction of the station is even complete, there is already talk of when the lights will be turned off.

Astronomy fans left disappointed after moon explosion

There wasn't a cloud in the sky early Friday when Dave Samuels trained his telescopes at the moon, hoping to catch a glimpse of a NASA rocket striking the lunar landscape.

The moon, shown shortly before NASA's rockets hit on Friday morning.

"We saw nothing," he said.

Samuels is vice president of the Fremont Peak Observatory near Monterey, California, which had invited members of the public to watch Friday's NASA mission through its telescopes.
